About ANU

ANU is Australia’s only national university. Established by an Act of the Federal Parliament in 1946, ANU was created to support the development of national unity and identity, to improve Australia’s understanding of itself and its neighbours, and to contribute to economic development and social cohesion. Its mandate was to “advance the cause of learning and research ... and take its rightful place among the great universities of the world”.

In the decades since its establishment, ANU has built an international reputation for excellence in research and education. We have over 20,000 staff and students working towards a greater future. Their work spans a diverse and extensive range–from the development of anti-cancer drugs to the preservation of rare Pacific languages.

ANU is committed to the values of academic freedom in the pursuit of knowledge, integrity in all its activities, collegiality in its relationships and engagement with its communities and the nation. We are a respected voice in Australia’s national conversation, contributing to public policy and equipping our leaders with expert insight and confidence.

ANU is a resource for the nation, with a high concentration of internationally renowned scholars. Our students work side-by-side with researchers, sharing in existing knowledge and constantly searching for new answers.

Our research seeks to answer global questions, the results of which will change the world.
